If something goes wonky in first 3 yrs their standard warranty should cover it. So generally as a rule I don't bother with the extra expense of AppleCare. And I have purchased extended warranty in past and the devices have worked near flawlessly for 3-4yrs, then the week after extended warranty runs out shit starts going wonky. I look after my devices like newborn babies, so I very rarely break them.

It’s nice to be covered, even with software issues or things that come up. I also don’t want to spend the money to replace my laptop prematurely if I break it. I bought it for my new MBP and pay annually because I feel like $1200 is a lot to spend on something and not insure it. I once spilled a drink all over my old macbook and I was glad to have coverage.
